How to Wire a 12V Fridge in a Van (Fuse, Wire, Switch)

Wiring a 12V fridge is one of the easiest jobs in a van build, but it still needs a fuse and the right wire gauge to be safe. The path is simple: battery → fuse → (optional switch) → fridge. Here's how to do it cleanly.
The wiring path
- From the fuse block. Run the fridge's positive wire to your fuse block, not straight to the battery post.
- Fuse it. Add a fuse sized to the wire, usually 5–7.5A for a compressor fridge. The fuse protects the cable.
- Optional switch. A switch lets you cut the fridge without unplugging — handy for storage.
- Negative back to the bus bar. Run the negative to your negative bus bar.
Pick the right wire
A fridge doesn't pull much (3–5A average), so the wire isn't huge, but match it to the fuse and the run length. For a typical short run, 14–16 AWG is common. Check exact sizing in the wire gauge guide.
Wire it for the compressor, not the label
A 45W fridge might peak higher when the compressor kicks on. Size the fuse and wire for that startup surge, not just the average — a little headroom avoids nuisance blown fuses.
Don't run it through the inverter
A 12V fridge should run directly on 12V, never through an inverter — that just wastes ~10% of your power converting DC to AC and back. This is a big reason 12V compressor fridges are so efficient.
Budget the energy
A compressor fridge is your biggest daily load at ~400–540 Wh. Make sure your battery and solar cover it — the free calculator has the fridge in its appliance list.
FAQ
How do I wire a 12V fridge in a van?
Run the positive from a fused point (usually the fuse block), through an optional switch, to the fridge, and the negative back to the bus bar. Fuse it to the wire, often 5–7.5A.
What size fuse for a 12V fridge?
Typically 5–7.5A for a compressor fridge, sized to protect the wire and allow for the compressor's startup surge. Check the fridge's manual for its recommended fuse.
Can I plug a 12V fridge straight into a cigarette socket?
For short trips, yes, if the socket is fused appropriately. For a permanent build, wire it to a proper fuse block for a cleaner, safer install.
