Bus bars and a fuse block turn a messy pile of wires into a clean, safe 12V system. Instead of cramming six ring terminals onto one battery post, you run one cable to a distribution point and branch everything from there — each circuit individually fused. Here's how van 12V distribution works.

The problem they solve

Your battery has one positive and one negative terminal, but you have a fridge, fan, lights, water pump, USB sockets, and more. Stacking them all on the battery is unsafe and ugly. Distribution hardware gives every circuit a proper home.

Fuse every circuit

Sizing the bus bar and main fuse

  • Bus bar rating must exceed the total current that can flow through it (sum your circuits plus the inverter).
  • Main fuse sits just after the battery to protect the main cable — size it to that cable's ampacity.

If you run a big inverter, the main path carries serious amps — size the main cable, bus bar, and fuse together.

Keep it tidy

  • Label every fuse
  • Use ferrules or proper ring terminals, torqued (loose connections are the #1 cause of mystery failures)
  • Keep positive and negative runs neat and separated

What's the difference between a bus bar and a fuse block?

A bus bar simply splits one connection into several with no protection. A fuse block splits the positive and fuses each branch. Most vans use a positive fuse block and a plain negative bus bar.

Does each 12V appliance need its own fuse?

Yes — each circuit gets a fuse sized to its wire, so a fault blows only that fuse and protects its cable.
