The fridge is the one appliance that runs all day, every day — so choosing between a 12V compressor fridge and a propane (absorption) fridge shapes your entire van's power system. The short version: 12V compressor fridges win for most modern builds, but propane still has a niche. Here's the full comparison.

  • 12V compressor fridge: works like a home fridge, running a small compressor off your battery. Efficient, cools fast, works at any angle.
  • Propane absorption fridge (3-way): uses a propane flame (or AC/DC heat) to drive a chemical cooling cycle. No compressor, nearly silent, sips very little electricity.

Why 12V compressor fridges dominate modern vans

  1. They pair perfectly with solar. A compressor fridge uses about 400–540 Wh a day — comfortably covered by a 200W panel in decent sun. Your roof already makes the power, so "free" cooling.
  2. They work in the heat. Absorption fridges lose cooling power exactly when you need it most — a hot afternoon. Compressor fridges don't care.
  3. They don't need to be level. Park on a slope and a compressor fridge keeps working; an absorption fridge can be damaged by running tilted.
  4. No propane to manage. One less fuel, one less combustion appliance, one less thing to refill.

Where propane still makes sense

  • Very little solar/battery: if you refuse to build an electrical system, propane cools without one.
  • Long stays with no sun and no driving: propane runs for weeks off a single bottle.
  • Existing RVs: many come with a 3-way fridge already installed.

But note: to power a compressor fridge you don't need a huge system. Even a modest 100Ah battery and 200W of solar handles it indefinitely — which is why most new builds skip propane for the fridge.
