How to Mount Solar Panels on a Van (Rigid vs Flexible, Drill vs No-Drill)

Mounting solar panels on a van roof isn't hard, but the details decide whether your array survives highway speeds and stays leak-free for years. The two big choices: rigid or flexible panels, and drill or no-drill mounting. Here's how to get both right.

Mounting method 1: brackets (most common for rigid)

Aluminum Z-brackets or corner brackets lift the panel off the roof, creating the cooling air gap. Two ways to attach them:

  • Drilled: bolt brackets through the roof, sealed with butyl tape and self-leveling lap sealant. Strongest hold; requires sealing done properly.
  • Adhesive (VHB tape + brackets): 3M VHB or structural adhesive bonds brackets to the roof — no holes. Popular on Sprinters and Transits where people fear drilling.

Mounting method 2: adhesive-direct (flexible panels)

Flexible panels can be glued straight to the roof with adhesive or VHB. No air gap means they run hotter and lose some output — a real tradeoff, not just cosmetic.

To drill or not to drill?

No-drill (adhesive):

  • No holes, no leak risk from fasteners
  • Faster, renter/resale friendly
  • Relies on surface prep — clean and prime properly or it lets go on the highway

Drilled:

  • Mechanically strongest — nothing beats a bolt
  • Must be sealed correctly or it will leak
  • The traditional choice for permanent builds

A common hybrid: bond brackets with VHB and add a couple of well-sealed bolts on a big array for peace of mind at speed.

The install checklist

  1. Plan the layout first. Position panels around vents, fans, and racks. Avoid shading one panel with another or with a roof obstruction — shade cripples output, especially on series-wired arrays.
  2. Clean and prep the roof — degrease thoroughly; adhesives fail on dirty or dusty metal.
  3. Mount brackets, leaving an air gap for rigid panels.
  4. Run the cable through a weatherproof roof gland (cable entry), sealed with lap sealant.
  5. Wire to the charge controller — never connect panels straight to the battery. Add an in-line fuse and follow the wire and fuse guide.
  6. Seal everything with self-leveling sealant and let it cure fully before driving.
