The 144 wheelbase is the most popular stealth-friendly Sprinter. Roof space is the main limit: after a Maxxair fan and a roof rack you can usually fit two 200 W panels or three slimmer 100 W panels. Most 144 builds run a compressor fridge, a roof fan, lights, a laptop, and Starlink, which lands around 1,000–1,500 Wh a day. Pair that with a 200 Ah LiFePO4 bank for two days of cloudy autonomy.

Fitting panels to a Mercedes Sprinter 144
On a 144 the roof fills up fast. A Maxxair fan takes a 14x14 in square near the middle, and most builds add a second vent or a fan over the galley, which splits the remaining run into two awkward strips. The practical answer is two 200 W panels mounted fore and aft of the fan rather than three smaller ones fighting for the same space: fewer brackets, fewer roof penetrations, and less shading from the fan housing in low sun. If you run a roof rack or a deck, measure the shadow it throws in winter before committing to a layout.
Solar alone, or solar plus alternator?
The 144 is the classic stealth build, which means a lot of time parked in cities and under trees where solar underdelivers. Almost every full-time 144 ends up adding a DC-DC charger so driving days top the bank back up. Budget for it from the start rather than discovering the gap in November.
