Grounding a Van Electrical System: Do You Need It?

Does a van electrical system need grounding? Yes — the DC negative connects to the van chassis at one point, and any AC/shore-power system needs proper grounding too. But "grounding" in a van isn't the same as house grounding, and getting the concept right prevents both nuisance faults and real hazards. Here's what it means.
DC grounding: the chassis is your negative path
In a 12V van system, the vehicle chassis acts as part of the negative side. The core rule is simple:
Connect your negative bus bar to the chassis at one single, clean, bare-metal point.
Why one point? Multiple ground connections can create "ground loops" — stray currents that cause weird gremlins in your electronics and monitoring. One solid ground keeps the system clean. This ties into your overall wiring layout.
How to do it
- Pick a spot on the bare metal chassis (grind off paint to bare metal)
- Bolt a heavy ground cable from your negative bus bar to it
- Use a star washer and torque it tight
- Protect against corrosion with a dab of dielectric grease
The ground cable should be as beefy as your main negative — it can carry serious fault current.
AC grounding: don't improvise
If you add an inverter with AC outlets or a shore power hookup, the AC side needs proper grounding and an RCD/GFCI breaker. AC faults are a shock and fire risk, and the grounding scheme (especially bonding neutral-to-ground) depends on your inverter and whether you're plugged into shore power.
