Shore power is the campground trick that lets you plug your van into a wall and run everything without touching your battery. Set up right, it charges your house bank, powers your AC appliances, and gives your solar a rest — all from a standard outlet. Here's how it works and the parts you need.

What "shore power" means

Borrowed from boating, shore power just means connecting your van to an external AC source — a campground pedestal, a garage outlet, or a friend's driveway. While plugged in, your van runs on grid power instead of your battery, and a charger tops the battery back up.

What you can do while plugged in

  • Charge your house battery fully (great after cloudy stretches)
  • Run AC appliances — heater, kettle, tools — without draining anything

The smart choice: an inverter/charger combo

Instead of a separate inverter and a separate charger, many builders use one inverter/charger unit. It does both:

  • Unplugged: works as a normal inverter, turning battery power into AC.
  • Plugged in: flips to charger mode, powering your AC outlets from shore power and charging your battery at the same time — often with automatic pass-through so it switches seamlessly.

It costs more up front but saves space and wiring versus buying two devices, and it's the cleanest way to add shore power to a build.

Safety essentials

AC power is more dangerous than 12V DC — treat it with respect:

  • Use a proper shore power inlet, not a bare cord dangling out a window
  • Include an RCD/GFCI breaker on the AC side to cut power on a fault
  • Use correctly rated cable and connectors
  • Keep AC and DC wiring physically separated in the van

Do you even need shore power?

  • Run power-hungry AC appliances and want to top up fast in winter
