Do You Need an Inverter in a Camper Van?

Do you actually need an inverter in your camper van? Only if you plan to run appliances that use household AC power — a laptop charger with a wall plug, an induction cooktop, a blender, power tools. If everything in your van runs on 12V (fridge, fan, lights, USB charging), you can skip the inverter entirely and save money, space, and wasted energy.

What an inverter does

Your battery stores 12V DC power. Wall outlets in a house deliver 120V AC (230V in much of the world). An inverter converts your battery's 12V DC up to 120V AC so you can plug in normal household devices.

The catch: conversion wastes energy — about 10% — and the inverter itself draws power just being switched on (5–20W idle). So AC is always less efficient than running things directly on 12V.

The 12V-first rule

Experienced van builders follow one principle: run everything you can on 12V, and use the inverter only for what truly needs AC.

Notice how much runs natively on 12V. Many full-time vanlifers get by with either no inverter or just a small one for occasional use. It's often cheaper to buy a 12V version of an appliance than to buy and feed a big inverter.

When you DO need an inverter

You need one — and a decent-sized one — if you want:

  • Induction cooking (1,500–1,800W)
  • Electric kettle, microwave, coffee maker (800–1,200W)
  • Hair dryer, power tools (1,000W+)
  • A laptop that only charges from a wall brick, or camera/drone chargers

What size inverter?

Match the inverter's continuous rating to your largest single AC appliance, plus headroom:

Multiple AC appliances or a bigger kitchen 3,000W

And critically — the inverter is only half the equation. A 2,000W inverter running an induction cooktop pulls ~165A from a 12V battery. That drains a 100Ah battery in well under an hour and demands very thick cable. Big inverters need big batteries and big wire, which is why electric cooking is the biggest jump in any van's budget.

Pure sine vs modified sine

If you buy an inverter, get pure sine wave. Modified sine is cheaper but can buzz, run motors hot, and damage sensitive electronics (CPAP machines, some laptop chargers, medical devices). The small savings aren't worth the risk.

The honest answer for most builds

  • Weekender with a fridge, fan, lights, phones: you probably don't need an inverter at all, or just a tiny one.
  • Remote worker: a small 300–600W inverter (or USB-C charging) covers the laptop; you likely don't need more.
  • Full-timer who cooks with electricity: yes, a 2,000–3,000W pure sine inverter — and size your battery bank and wiring around it.

Can I run a van without an inverter?

Absolutely, if all your appliances are 12V — fridge, lights, fan, USB charging. Many vanlifers do exactly this and save money and space.

Will a small inverter charge my laptop?

Yes — a 300–600W inverter easily handles a laptop charger. Even better, many modern laptops charge from a 12V USB-C socket with no inverter at all.

Why does my inverter drain the battery when nothing's plugged in?

Inverters draw idle power (5–20W) just being on. Switch it off when you're not using it, or wire it through a switch.

Is a 2000W inverter enough for a camper van?

For an induction burner, microwave, or most single kitchen appliances, yes. For running several big AC appliances at once, step up to 3,000W — and make sure your battery and cable can supply the current.
