How to Winterize Your Van Solar and Electrical System

Winterizing your van's electrical system is less about the wiring and more about the battery, the reduced sun, and moisture. Cold weather cuts your solar output roughly in half, stops lithium from charging below freezing, and fills a sealed van with condensation. Here's how to keep power flowing through winter.
1. Protect the battery from freezing
The big one: LiFePO4 can't charge below 0°C (32°F) without damage, and a good battery's BMS will block charging when it's cold, so your solar shows power but nothing goes in. Fixes, in order of ease:
- Keep the battery inside the heated living space, not an exterior locker
- Insulate the battery compartment
- Run a diesel heater to hold the interior above freezing
- Buy batteries with built-in self-heating

2. Plan for half the solar
Winter sun is low, weak, and often hidden. A panel that made 750 Wh in July may make 300–400 Wh in December — see the seasonal output numbers. To cope:
- Oversize your array beyond summer needs, or
- Lean harder on alternator/DC-DC charging — driving becomes your main winter charger
- Consider tilting panels toward the low sun if you're parked for days (is it worth it?)
- Keep panels clear of snow, even a thin layer kills output
3. Fight condensation
Cold metal + warm breath = water everywhere, including on your electrical connections. Corroded terminals are a top cause of charging faults. Ventilate (crack a vent), run the heater dry, and check connections for corrosion.
4. Size for the season you travel in
