Charging LiFePO4 in Cold Weather: The Freezing Rule Explained

Here's a fact that catches many van lifers off guard in winter: you must not charge a LiFePO4 battery below 0°C (32°F). Doing so permanently damages the cells. Good lithium batteries block it automatically — which is why "my solar shows power but nothing's charging" is a common cold-morning complaint. Here's what's happening and how to keep charging through winter.

Why freezing is a problem for lithium

Charging a LiFePO4 battery below freezing causes lithium plating — metallic lithium builds up on the cell's anode instead of storing properly. It's cumulative and irreversible: it permanently reduces capacity and can create internal short-circuit risk. So the rule exists to protect a several-hundred-dollar battery.

Two things to separate clearly:

  • Charging below 0°C: harmful — must be prevented.
  • Discharging below 0°C: fine. Your battery will happily power your van in the cold; it just won't accept a charge.

How the BMS protects you

Quality LiFePO4 batteries include a Battery Management System (BMS) with low-temperature charge protection. When the cells drop below freezing, the BMS blocks incoming charge current. Four ways to keep charging in winter

1. Self-heating batteries. Many quality LiFePO4 batteries now include built-in heating pads that warm the cells using a little charge current before accepting a full charge. The simplest solution if you're buying new for cold climates.

2. Insulate the battery box. Batteries live longer and stay above freezing more easily inside an insulated compartment, ideally in the heated living space rather than an exterior locker. A battery generates a little heat in use, and insulation holds it.

3. Heat the space. A diesel heater keeping the van's interior above freezing keeps the battery above freezing too — the most common real-world fix for full-time winter vanlifers.

4. Warm before you charge. If the battery is cold, let the van (and battery) warm above 0°C before expecting solar or the alternator to charge. On a frosty morning, that might mean mid-morning once the cabin warms.

Discharging still works — plan around it

Because you can discharge in the cold, a practical winter strategy is:

  • Run loads overnight from the battery as normal.
  • Let the interior warm in the morning (heater or sun).
  • Once above freezing, solar and driving refill the bank.
