Van Battery Types Explained: LiFePO4, AGM, Lead-Acid

Van battery choices come down to four types, but for a modern build it's really a two-horse race: LiFePO4 (lithium) for almost everyone, AGM for tight budgets. Flooded lead-acid and gel rarely make sense in a van anymore. Here's every type, ranked for van life.

LiFePO4 — the default
Lithium iron phosphate dominates van builds for good reason:
- Double the usable capacity of lead-acid per amp-hour (80% vs 50% depth)
- Far longer life — thousands of cycles vs hundreds
- Half the weight for the same usable energy
- Fast charging and stable voltage

AGM — the budget pick
Absorbent Glass Mat is sealed lead-acid — maintenance-free and cheaper upfront. But you only use ~50% of its capacity, it's heavy, and it lasts a few hundred cycles. Fine for a weekender who rarely goes off-grid, poor value for full-timers. See the side-by-side numbers.
Gel and flooded — skip them
- Gel: similar to AGM but fussier to charge; little reason to choose it.
- Flooded lead-acid: cheapest, but it vents hydrogen (needs ventilation), requires topping up with water, and must stay upright. Not suited to a living space.

- Full-timer / remote worker / big loads → LiFePO4, no question.
- Weekender on a tight budget, low usage → AGM is acceptable.
- Everyone else → LiFePO4 pays off over time.
